How to Be Less Triggered
With National Bestselling author Dr. Kelly Flanagan
Last week, Dr. Kelly Flanagan joined us to talk about what actually happens inside us when the people we love most say or do something that flips a switch and suddenly we’re not responding, we’re reacting. Seriously… if you just listen to the 15 second teaser in the very beginning of this episode you’ll know you’re in for a treat.
Kelly has a fabulous new book called The Road Less Triggered- Turning Conflict into Connection with a Single Choice, and I’ll tell you what… he’s the kind of guy who can explain the complexity of your nervous system and relational patterns to you in a way that doesn’t make you feel like a science experiment. It helps you finally have words for something you’ve been experiencing your whole life.
We are both licensed therapists, so a lot of this stuff we cognitively know, yet we learned so much in this conversation that we’ve been chewing on. We talk about things like how anger is almost always a doorway into something deeper, how men in particular learn to block sadness before it ever surfaces, and why the question that changes everything isn’t “what’s wrong with me?” — it’s “what happened to me?”
If you’ve ever felt completely hijacked by a reaction you didn’t see coming (and if you’re really honest with yourself… you definitely have) this one is for you.
Listen and send this to someone in your life who could use some permission to feel what he feels.
